Next time trailer (and my first attempt at YouTube embedding):

Still grumbling about the 'one line too many' thing in this trailer but it does look like another interesting one. Also that pose against the wall is giving me unwanted Doomsday feels

Sad to say though it doesn't look like Clara's Orient Express dress will make an appearance

(it's too soon I know, but I really wanted to embed something...feel free to let this sink to the bottom till Saturday)

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but what is this "grumble" about?

And a lot of 'Fear Her' as well, I think.

I think she is referring to her post in the Next episode trailer thread, where they include one too many lines in the trailer which rather spoiler the plot a bit.

SaynaHawk - I salute your awesome poll options!!

For the last few episodes I've found that the trailers have been really good teasers up until the point they include one extra line of dialogue that hugely hints at a plot reveal/extra layer etc. The right balance of information is important in trailers and they keep just going over in my opinion. In this one, I think it's the '2 dimensions' line.

Ah I see what you mean. To be honest I wish they (as in all programmes) would refrain from doing this anyway.

By heck, Can't believe this but for once me and Of Mars agree on something. I hate these Next Time trailers at the end of episodes even more so when they don't edit them out of the dvd releases.

I couldn't deal with that, would seriously annoy me. It happens occasionally on Netflix as well, but usually just for the first few weeks and then they magically disappear from all episodes

He he….I thought exactly the same.

I actually really like Clara, possibly my favourite of the Nu-Who companions since Rose…although I did quite like Martha.

It’s her drippy boyfriend, Balsa-boy, I can’t stand.

Oh ho ho! It gets better on the Clara front:

Spoiler:
"There are quite a few long term arc things that Steven wanted in place. I remember drafts of it where Clara wasn't coping with being the Doctor - but eventually we switched it and it went the other way. Now, its a little bit like she's a better Doctor than the Doctor himself!"

Jamie Mathieson, DWM 479, page 19.

Really!?! You don't say!!

Well, sounds like they're going to have fun with it anyway. Been done though hasn't it! :longwink:

I'll watch it as a show that isn't really Doctor Who this week. ;)

It might still be good as that.

Clara getting to be the main character loses it's impact when it's happened every week but one.
Still we may be jumping the gun a bit.... but I doubt it

At this point it's just funny that the only people who can't see the irony of the premise of this episode - are the series writers!!

Personally, I can't see how Clara is any different from Rose saving the universe by absorbing the time vortex, or Donna saving the universe from obliteration by Davros. The assistant has always been too important since the show's return. It's the main problem with the series, but Clara is no different than those who came before her.

I don't have problems with it. The classic series had a blind spot that a female companion needed constant rescuing by a white middle aged man

That's a fair point Runny, no one wants a disempowered, screaming, damsel -in-distress. We might as well bring back Mel if we do that.

That's a fair point but I think it just seems so much more "in your face" about it.
And no one wants a scream queen type but there is a middle ground. And for some people this series hasn't found it.
Clara is the human companion who relatively new to this.
The Doctor is an alien super genius.
Common sense says he would do more problem solving, world saving than Clara

If they do, then they are worse fools for doing so! As it happens, the idea of an invasion by 2 dimensional beings is an ok premise. It will be as ever poorly used, especially because The Dr is trapped and it is up to Clara, so it will just end up another generic excuse to carry on with Clara is anything youwanthertobethisweek.

I agree entirely - I said it before in room in another place, that my criticsms of Moffat are the same that I would have said (or rather still do) about Russell. The difference is that Moffat has amplified it, increased the rate, and thrown in his own rubbish as well.

runalong wrote:

I aslo agree with this - it is not the fact that a female or a companion is a main part in the show. Long may that continue, and I would rather they were the main focus of the show and not the Dr - meaning in terms of keeping him a mystery [TOO LATE!]. I just think there are better ways of writing it, other than making the companion [this goes for all 8 series]: the central solution to the season / the most important person in the Universe, or the Dr's life / in love with, or fancies the Dr / character development means having a "life", "family" or "boyfriend" on Earth.

I agree there has been a long run now of companions doing the heavy lifting, though I think in previous companions while they did save the day a few times it was mostly big buildup and having them be the super-companion at the series finale. With Clara she was set up to be the Mysterious Girl from day one and seemingly has saved the Doctor in almost every story she's in. Plus the big end episodes too.

I'm not fussed by this episode at all, with it being a Doctor lite one effectiely but I do think its amusing that there was clearly a meeting at the DWstudios and they decided that in this episode Clara will effectively be playing the Doctor. Ignoring that fact that that's precisely what she's been doing since she joined!

Very much enjoyed that. More to the story than the trailer suggested and some very intriguing character thing happening with the Doctor.

Also really liked the look of next week's episode.

Had worries at first this was going to be Fear Her 2, but fortunately that didn't happen and instead we got a good tense thriller.
Can I copyright the idea of mini-tardises for aquariums to put hermit crabs in which was the image I had of the doctor's hand pulling the Tardis along?

An improvement on last week, but not by enough. Voted okay but once again swaps solid story-telling & character development for quick cheap monsters and self-aggrandizing speeches that contradict the thematic elements of the story. Much like Season 6's Night Terrors it's retaining the worst elements of the RTD era I had hoped were disappearing.

This was very much Fear Her 2.0, with some Misfits touches thrown in (and nods to other serials like Logopolis and The Three Doctors). It's certainly an improvement on version 1.0 but not classic Who.

Anyone else notice, Missy used 11's lines about Clara? Red herring :?:

4/5 for me.
Clara being the Doctor is no novelty but it was better handled than I feared.
The monsters and actors were great. The effects spot on and the script was witty with the Doctor seeming to have settled into his personality at last.
The mark off was for how the threat was dealt with.
Spoiler:
Clara did a clever job in getting power to the TARDIS and Yaaaay, here's the Doctor.....who.. wait for it........ waves his sonic and they disappear

And an intriguing last scene. All in all, good fun
