Looking a bit generic action film-ey to me, but still interesting.

Yeah. Terrible trailer. Only an interest in Predator would have me interested. Not this.

Also, brings up bad memories of AvP 2.

Also not too sure about about a storyline where we are told by an "expert"* that the Predators are now enhancing themselves genetically by taking traits from other alien species.

Seems very Shane Black, but not necessarily very Predatory. And why do I get the feeling they are going for a US PG 13.

* So Earth in the modern day has scientists that know the physiognomy of numerous alien species and are au fair with interspecies genetics. Yeah really believable.

Yeah, trailer looked pretty poor for this. I’m still holding out for an AvP based on the Sierra PC game, or The first Dark Horse AvP Series, set in the Alien time period, that was so much better than the continuity breaking AvP movies we’ve already had to suffer, but I won’t hold my breath.

It was all so predictable until the end. Now they have my interest.

It's definitely winning me over.

Yeah. Though I was hoping for great things on hearing Shane Black was involved, the first trailer left me cold, looked too run of the mill and generic, but the more I see the more intrigued I get. Definitely looking forward to this more now.

Just a shame that lead actor seems to have zero charisma

Saw this last night. It was pretty light weight but enjoyable if you go along for the ride. Some of the editing choices were really choppy though. And the coda reminded me of Brent Spiner at the end of Independence Day 2.

If you ignore the last 2 or 3 minutes though, it was enjoyable, though no where near the quality of Black's normal work.

Pretty dire reviews have made me think again about a cinema trip, I might wait for the home release.

I liked it myself. I have just come from seeing it. It wasn’t groundbreaking or anything, but it was alright. It took the franchise in an interesting direction and moved the mythology along. The lead could have been more charismatic, but he was serviceable enough. I’ll admit I was hoping for better from Shane Black, but it was hardly terrible, and an enjoyable enough watch. The very end bit is a little ropey, but other than that it was a solid enough entry in the franchise. I’d perhaps put it second only to the original.

Dissapointed beyond the capacity for rational thought ...

I hated the Choppa moment, I hated the thuumb up moment, I hated the tech bit at the end, the bater between them was just painful ... not as bad as requiem but my second to last favourite movie with Sports Hunters in it

Liked it, but with reservations. The editing is so choppy in places that when a couple of the action scenes ended I had trouble working out what the hell had just happened (or maybe my addled middle-aged brain just can't process a rapid influx of visual information the way it used to). And the ending seemed 'off' - it reminded me of the complete tone-change that Universal Soldier: The Return sprang on us, by expecting us to believe that Jean-Claude Van Damme's character was now happily an employee and vocal defender of the same Uni-Sol program that he'd previously been an unwilling victim of. I got the strong impression that another ending was originally filmed, scored badly at test screenings, and the ending that we got instead was something quickly cobbled together (a key character is conspicuous by their absence).

However, I like the fact that The Predator does try to do something different with Predator mythology, as opposed to being just another re-heated 'hunting humans' movie. The fact that it's apparently been confirmed as being set before the events of Predators also means that it hints at possible answers as to how the internal Predator conflict portrayed in the earlier film came about, and the ending - flawed though it is - also suggests why the larger species of Predators started bringing their prey to another world instead of continuing to venture to Earth.

So, how do I think The Predator compares to the other films in the series? This seems like a good opportunity to grade all the movies, listing them in order of personal preference;
1.) Predator 2. Surprise #1. Yes, I prefer the first sequel to the original movie. Don't get me wrong - I think the initial Predator is a better film, I just consider Predator 2 to be a more entertaining and enjoyable watch. It's a relentless juggernaut of a film - loud, fast and impossible to stop.
2.) Predator. A stone cold classic. Enough said.
3.) Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. Surprise #2. Yes, I like this movie, despite the fact that everybody else and their dog seems to despise it. I haven't included the first Aliens vs Predator (which I'm not a fan of) in this list, as I think it's very much an Aliens movie that just happens to have some Predators in it. But Requiem looks and feels like a proper Predator film, and location-wise it follows a logical progression from the first two Predator movies - the first was set in a war-torn jungle teeming with soldiers, guerrillas and mercenaries, the second took place in a large crime-ridden city filled with cops, drug-dealers, SWAT teams, gang-bangers and gun-toting civilians. Requiem transpires in a tranquil small town, and since this means there logically aren't many human opponents for the Predator to take on, it gives him a xenomorph outbreak to deal with instead. It's a flawed film - many scenes are too dark to make out what's going on - but I consider it to be a very under-rated one.
4.) The Predator.
5.) Predators. For various reasons, I never saw this at the cinema and eventually received it on DVD as a present from a friend. I recall that the reviews upon it's initial release mostly declared that it was 'a return to form' for the series, and 'a worthy sequel' to the original, but I found it extremely underwhelming. It's a uninspired rehash, with entire scenes from the first movie slavishly copied. It feels less like an official Predator film and more like one of the many shameless rip-offs, such as DNA or the Italian-made Robowar.

Finally, on a semi-related note, any fans of the Predator movies should try to track down Without Warning (1980). Just as the Fifties movie It! The Terror From Beyond Space is often cited as the direct inspiration for Alien, so Without Warning is clearly the forerunner of the first Predator. A group of four teenagers travel to a lake in the woods to swim, hang out, and have a picnic, and find themselves being targeted by an alien who hunts homo-sapiens for sport. The kids are helped and/or hindered by two future Oscar winners - Martin Landau as a mentally disturbed 'Nam vet, and Jack Palance as an eccentric gas station proprietor and backwoods hunter. The actor inside the alien costume is actually Kevin Peter Hall, who went on to play the title creature in the first two Predator films. Even without the Predator connection, Without Warning is worth seeking out.
