Ok, let's get this ball rolling

Anyone who ever tells you audience numbers don't mean a thing is probably a Guardian columnist  after a couple of years of poor figures Sony has seen huge job losses. Without Harry Potter and a DC Comics franchise WB are facing take-over threats

Now DreamWorks look to be up for sale

http://deadline.com/2014/09/dreamworks- ... nk-842395/

Though "How to Train You Dragon 2" has taken $610M Globally, it made $175M in the US and currently ranks as the year's 12th highest grossing picture (probably 15th by year end)

However that has been a huge sucess for DreamWorks as of the last 5 films only 2 have actually made a profit losing around $100M apiece (though Dragon's success has paid those losses off

Netflix's plan to simultaneously offer "Crouching Tiger 2" along with its theatrical release have hit a rock as theater chains say they won't be screening the movie

Here in the US,, the cable and satellite channels have often offered "Before it hits cinemas" deals for films that had failed to get a theatrical distribution and were in already consigned as "straight to video" hell

"Crouching Tiger 2" had secured a theatrical distribution when yesterday Netflix announced they had acquired the film and would stream it simultaneously with the film hitting theatres

However now it seems that theatres are pulling out of distribution deals and the picture will be offered solely via Netflix

http://deadline.com/2014/09/amc-enterta ... nd-843682/

Snarkily AMC point out that the only Imax screens available to the film are "Science Museums and Aquariums"

TETRIS: The Movie will soon be coming to a theatre near you:
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2014/09/30/tetris-movie/

You can see the thought process behind it:
-Mortal Kombat movie made over $100m worldwide. Is that the ceiling for Video Game movies?
-Well that franchise only sold 35m copies, there are bigger games out there.
-What game sold the most copies ever?
-TETRIS sold 143m copies but....
-Excellent TETRIS The Movie! Big budget action film
-But....
-If Mortal Kombat made $120m and this is over 4x as big it'll make at least $500m!
-But...
-Then there is 3D and Imax tickets. And merchandising.
-Just....
-Excellent idea, you'll get a promotion for this.
-Err.... Thanks!

Adam Sandler has announced that he's signed a deal that will see his next 4 films debut on Netflix

Sandler has suffered a bit of a fall from grace recently in which he's had to slash the budget of his films from a usual $100M to around $40M for them to make money (Blended made $126M worldwide which would have been a huge loss at his normal budget but a decent profit at $40M)

The theaters recently refused to show "Crouching Tiger 2" because of its simultaneous release on Netflix so this may mean Sandler's next few pictures won't get theatrical releases too

In the continued series of why bother? sequels coming of Hollywood, Jim Henson company are working on:
Quote:
....a quartet of legacy titles in the Henson library — a “Fraggle Rock” movie that’s been in development at New Regency; a sequel to 1982’s “The Dark Crystal”; a sequel to 1986’s “Labyrinth”; and a movie based on the Emmet Otter character.

I take it that is only if he signs a new contract as they will want him for Avengers 3.

Although with The Judge opening the way it did, it was to be expected that it would give more impetus to Downey to get back in the armour.

These days where Stark ends and Downey starts does seem a blurry line.

Just seen. The rumours are that if Ironman is in Cap 3 - its going to be Civil War. Or at least the kickoff and that's what Phase 3 will be.

If that is true. WOW.

All of a sudden, maybe those rumours about a deal with Sony have a smidgen of a possibility.

This was at an investors meeting so was probably coming to reassure them they had big plans following the large scale job lay-offs they did last month:
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/warne ... 201307370/
The reason we also got new Harry Potter and Lego movies announced at the same meeting.

Dave, that's actually for the DC comic, Suicide Squad, not the Sinister Six.

It they're casting them in the roles which make sense from their appearance:
Spoiler:
Smith as Bronze Tiger, Robbie as Enchantress (or Plastique) & Hardy as Boomerang

That would move me from meh to really interested in this project.

Okay Marvel you've made $700M Worldwide from "Guardians of the Galaxy" and you're about to open the film in China, rapidly becoming the World's 2nd largest market maybe you might have spent a bit of money on subtitling it instead of giving it to someone who speaks Chinese at a High-School level

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/p ... ans-741610

Reminds me when I was watching a film some years ago in Germany and whoever had subtitled the picture didn't speak very good German as they chose the wrong meaning word after word

For example Bright can mean intelligent or well lit, but it doesn't in Germany do seeing the would be Genius Child described continually as Strahlend (giving off light) instead of Hoffnungsvolle made you soon realize they'd just run the script through a translation tool

Age of Extinction

"Transformers: Age of Extinction" has now climbed to $1,087M which means it now ranks as the 10th highest grossing picture of all-time pushing the $1,084M of "Dark Knight Rises" into #11

Two sightly ameliorating points:
1. This is still $36m behind Transformers: Dark of the Moon and doesn't look likely to overtake it.
2. This is almost entirely due to China, where it has become by far the most successful foreign film taking over $300m (Avatar took just over $200m). Removing China from the charts it's only the 45th most successful film, between Spider-Man 2 & Indiana Jones 4.

The other problem with China is that usually studios take about 40% of the revenue from Overseas Markets (as opposed to 50% from the Domestic Market) but from China they only collect 25% so Paramount are seeing just $100M of that $300M, though it still dwarfed the next largest market Russia with $45M

Never knew that - that studios got different money back from different territories.

Is China's high take down to additional taxes?

Haven't been able to find a reliable reason as to why China's return is so low, but here's a WSJ article on how different markets are more valuable than others

http://online.wsj.com/articles/for-holl ... 1409241925

I believe it's partly down to distribution costs, there's practically only one distributor in China (owned by the State) so they got to charge whatever fees they want for distributing the film and so while the cinemas take their half the Distributor takes a bigger share too
