This thread will be dedicated to news on any problems that are occurring with the forum and what I'm doing/what you need to do about them. I'll try and keep this as up-to-date as possible.

So, firstly:

At the moment there seems to be some problem with iforumer forums acting up a bit, with people experiencing long loading times for pages or getting "page unavailable" type messages. I've gotten on to the techy people and it's being looked into, but in the meantime, if you start having these problems (or have them already), deleting all cookies and offline web content from your PC seems to fix this problem. The only real downside of doing this is that all the sites you go to with a log on page won't remember your details for the first time you go there (they will after, you'll just have to manually log in once).

Hope no-one is having too much trouble.

Refreshing works when it's a one off, but recently that's not been helping and the forum's been, for some people (me included for almost a day 'till I deleted the cookies) unusable.

Sorry for this latest outage. It lasted about three hours of=r so, but everything seems back up to full speed now.

As of tomorrow, I'll be making a back-up of all forum data every day, as the sister company of iforumer (who host this site), Forum5, has just had a disaster and lost thousands of forums, possibly forever. Thankfully, this forum is on a completely different set of servers and should be safe, though as I said, I'll be taking daily database back-ups just in case.

It may even be that the iforumer staff were taking measures to make sure a disaster didn't happen to them like forum5, in which case the down-time is perfectly justified.

I'll continue to be a pain on the iforumer support forums and try to get a few more concrete answers, but for now, I really don't think there's any reason to panic!

Forum5 lost one of the forums I post on - luckily its a small forum and they got it back.

I wondered what was going on last night! Thanks Tao

Everything seems to be fine for the moment! The forum has been up and running at it's usual speed since around half past twelve last night (Wednesday), which is encouraging.

The iForumer support forums are still down, showing only error messages when I try to log in ( http://WWW.iforumersupport.com/ ), which is slightly worrying, though I'd expect them to get the hosted forums up and running to get their revenue back on track before tackling the support forums, which don't have advertising.

If I were to speculate, I'd say that they've been trying to implement the upgrade program from phpBB2 to phpBB3 and something has gone terribly wrong. This is the problem when you use a heavily modified version of the php software, unfortunately, though when it's all sorted out and all the bugs are fixed you're left with a much better and feature-rich product.

I'll keep trying the support forums and hopefully have some answers soon! In the meantime, as I said, everything seems to be running smoothly at the moment so fingers crossed that's the last of the long outages for the time being.

Well, the support forums are back online and everything seems to be getting back to normal. There's even been an announcement that the forums on the Forum5 site have all been recovered and will be returning soon, which means the forum hosting company as a whole is fine and recovering from recent disasters.

I'm not anticipating any more outages in the near future, thankfully. I'll let you know if I get a reply to my requests for information on what's actually been happening!

Arr, I was a forum5 casualty.

I read the support forum for a day or two and got sick of the illiterate teenagers who were offering Hell itself upon the hosters because their tiny emo puddles were not available. I just fucked off and started a new forum.

Then I got drunk.

Then you won't have heard that the powers that be have recovered all the data and that all Forum5 forums will be returning within the next few days (read: sometime in the next month or so). I have a Forum5 forum and will be very happy to see it returned, the amount of effort I put into setting it up (a forum for my sister's rock club in Cambridge). :D

Wow, I thought they'd actually wiped the lot! That's good to know.

Am actually rather enjoying the new, phpbb3, forum though so can at least go back and copy anything worth keeping at least. And it's ad free which is a lovely bonus.
There's probably a catch around the corner but for now it's pretty okay.

Groovy. phpBB3 is great. I think that all the problems recently may be the result of the iforumer staff trying to get the conversion software sorted out, so we can upgrade our existing phpBB2 forums to 3 without losing anything. I hope they get it sorted, 'cos I really do want to upgrade.

If you're using phpBB3, you should check out my BB code tutorial on the iforumer Tips and Tutorials forum. The mods have stickied it so it's up near the top of page one. :D

The forum time thing? Best I can do is the last post in the "Getting the time right" thread I'm afraid.
